I think you're pointing to a fundamental human trait, that is, ignorance and the fear of the unknown.
Numerology is a "science" of its own. Astrology also deals with numbers for prediction of auspicious events and dates. The Hebrew alphabet also represents numbers as they don't have a numbering system. Every word is a number and every number can be computed to words and stories. And this leads to a plethora of predictions and speculations. The first letter Aleph stands for number 1. It is said that God emanated from Aleph.
Now a note of caution.
